Laky Delivers the Music

Posted on Feb 2, 2011

Leah LakyEven in a town with a population around 1300, residents need their news—and their music. And broadcasting that news and music to her Grand Marais, Minnesota, community is just what Leah Laky (pictured left) does.

Laky, a sophomore music major at Trinity Christian College, volunteers at 90.7 FM WTIP North Shore Community Radio, Cook County, Minnesota, as often as her schedule allows (given her school commitment a couple of states away). The station began as a non-profit organization with a goal of getting community news broadcasted, but now also provides music programming as well as a forum for residents to discuss public issues. Through online streaming, people can listen in from around the world.

Laky began as a co-host with her friend, Kristen Ramey. After gleaning knowledge and training from Ramey, she gained confidence to host her own shows; Laky's sister has also since joined in the co-hosting responsibilities. During her two-week Christmas break, Laky did three shows: she served as the Saturday Night Mix host and also the Monday Night Mix host, cruising through three-hour time slots during which she features an eclectic mix of music.

"I love music more than most things," Laky said, "so sharing my music with those who choose to tune in is a wonderful, beautiful thing that fits perfectly with my passions. It also opens my horizons as a music major and gives me more time to analyze music. I enjoy that a lot."

While she does not envision a career in radio, Laky said she would love to continue to be involved at a volunteer-based station if the opportunity exists. For now, she spends time serving in the worship team at Living Hope.

"I love leading worship at Living Hope," Laky said. "It also plays into music as my primary passion in life. I love to sing with the group because I can feel the spirit moving in the music. I haven't been part of many groups where you can actually feel the Lord working—it is such a blessing! I am so blessed to be a part of Living Hope—in general, and in the worship circle."
